JACKSON KING V PRO
This is my #1 guitar and has been with me for many, many years. It’s seen so much recording and stage time that the frets are literally worn down to the wood at this point. I need to have them replaced ASAP, so these days it doesn’t see much action. It’s a stock King V pro for the most part. The only thing I’ve changed on it is the bridge. It’s the same model bridge, but I had to pull the original off due to hardware problems. It was just worn out I guess. The current bridge I acquired from ex-Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman, and at one point it was installed on his #69 Jackson Kelly (which he gifted to his webmaster). I do have to say these guitars have the most comfortable fixed bridge I’ve ever used. The original models that came loaded on these guitars were Kahler APM3300 bridges, and they can still be purchased from Kahler today. You can also purchase the 7330 model from WammiWorld.com, which is basically the same bridge, but about half the cost.
Other than the bridge, as I said earlier, this guitar is stock. It’s loaded with a Jackson J80 pickup in the bridge position and a Bill Lawrence L500XL in the neck. It’s a neckthru model (Maple neck) with an ebony fretboard and pearl sharkfin inlays. The body, I believe, is Poplar. As with all of the guitars I own, I’ve installed Schaller Straplocks to keep the guitar where it belongs… strapped around my neck ;)
JACKSON KV2
This model is a not-so-stock USA Jackson which I purchased recently from a collector in Tehachapi, CA. It’s metallic silver in color, and is loaded with active electronics: a Seymour Duncan Blackout in the bridge position, and an EMG 60 in the neck. Controls are standard KV fare. As with all USA King Vs, it’s a rock maple neckthru design with ebony fretboard and mother of pearl inlays. The Jackson logo on the headstock is done in mother of pearl as well. As with the KV Pro, I believe the body wings are poplar on this model, but I could be wrong. If anything else, it would be Alder. I will double check on that.
I do a lot of recording with this guitar as of late. It has a distinct presence and raw power when playing that the passive pickups on the KV Pro just don’t have. Don’t get me wrong, I love the tone of the Pro, but I’m considering upgrading its electronics to Duncan Live Wires (Mustaine signatures). Those pickups just fucking SCREAM, and they almost sound organic. Very nice pickups indeed.
JACKSON Y2KV
This Jackson is somewhat of a rare bird. You don’t see many of these in the wild, as they were only made for a couple years before production stopped. The body on this guitar is Honduran Mahogany, and like the other King Vs it’s neckthru with an ebony fretboard and mother of pearl inlays. The pickups on this model are a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge and a Seymour Duncan Jazz in the neck. I’ve gotta say, this guitar is hands-down the best guitar I’ve ever played. Period. If you love flying Vs and you ever, EVER have a chance to buy one of these… DO IT. Period. Not only is it a super fast shredder, it has tone for days, due in part to the body wood I’d imagine (coupled with the pickup selection as well?). Either way, this model is a keeper. Definately a model Jackson would do well to produce to this day, but sadly the do not.
